Designed to meet National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and OSHA guidelines for the frozen (-20°C) and refrigerated storage of volatile and non-volatile materials in Hazardous Locations, Class 1, Division II, Group C & D.
Power cord is not included. Final power connections at site must be hardwired to meet local codes. 

All spark generating electrical components and connections (compressor, thermostat) are isolated and sealed in vapor-proof enclosures. Electrical wiring is hardwired for additional safety measures. These units are not intended for use in general clinical or research laboratories. See Flammable units.

Are the So-Low Explosion Proof Manual Defrost Freezers also suitable for flammable material storage?

Yes, they are.

What safety designs make this unit suitable for use in a Class 1, Division II, Group C & D environment?

The unit is spark-proof, meaning that all spark generating electrical components and connections (compressor, thermostat) are isolated and sealed in vapor-proof enclosures such that they will not ignite any flammable / explosive vapors unless they are damaged. This is also why the unit must be hard-wired and the unit does not come with a power cord: standard electrical outlets carry a risk of sparking and, therefore, ignition of vapors.

Are there special installation considerations for an explosion-proof freezer?

Yes. The freezer must be hardwired to the building's electric and cannot be connected to an electrical outlet via a plug, as that carries a sparking risk. Furthermore, the room / area around the freezer must also be explosion proof. For instance, any nearby equipment also must be explosion proof, any lighting and / or other fixtures must be explosion-proof, and there cannot be any electrical outlets.

What is the weight limit on the shelves?

Each shelf has a weight limit of 50 pounds.

Can the shelves be removed or can the freezer be built without shelves in it?

No. The fixed shelves are permanently in place and cannot be moved nor can the unit be built without the shelves, as refrigerant lines run through the shelves to help ensure more even temperature throughout the chamber.
